Dear Friends in Christ,
On Ash Wednesday, we are asked to commit ourselves "to observe a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word." (BCP 265) This commitment is done individually with the understanding that we are in community and is meant to be collective and relational.
Turning our hearts back to God, metanoia, aka repentance, is an active practice. Often it means shaking up our daily lives a bit - giving something up that is getting in our way of turning our hearts towards God, taking something new on that helps us be more present with God - AND reflecting on that practice to check in on how it's going and how we are feeling.
This is time set aside in the Church year; we are asked to be intentional about what we are doing and how we are working on our spiritual lives and our relationship with God. So this Lent we invite to join us in making a commitment to a Lenten practice and see the ways in which you can make room and turn your heart back towards God.
Please fill out the attached form, or fill out a paper copy and put it in the box at the back of the church.
Lent Form
And we encourage you to begin Lent next Wednesday with worship - either at Holy Apostles or another church near where you work. We will worship at 5:30pm (family service) & 7:30pm. We will do the imposition of ashes at both services.
In peace,
The Mothers
Attend Evening Prayer in Lent
Join others on Wednesday in Lent at 6:45pm for a peaceful end to a perfect night - Evening Prayer - a 30 minute in person service from the Book of Common Prayer with readings, prayers and time for quiet reflection.
Daily reading/listening to Lent reflections
This Lent we will be offering daily Lent reflections on the Psalms of Lamentation. Daily reflections are emailed out each day with a link to listen to them. Each day will include a psalm, a reflection by a parishioner on the psalm and the Lord’s Prayer - and if you listen to them, you’ll also hear wonderful music.
Ukranian Egg “Pysanky”
Join us on Thursdays 10am-12noon in Lent as we participate in the folk art long practiced in Eastern Europe in preparation for Easter. Traditional designs are provided or bring your own. You’ll be working with wax and dyes. No previous experience necessary.
Poetry in Lent
Join Missy Trull Sundays on Zoom in Lent at 8:00 pm to read and reflect on poems that explore Lenten themes. No prior experience reading poetry needed! We will muddle through the beauty and mystery of these poems together and hopefully draw closer to God in the process.
Give Something Up
A commitment to "giving up" something that is getting in your way from being closer to God, i.e. gossip, anger, jealousy, gluttony, envy, etc.
Parish Read
For Lent we are going to read How We Learn to Be Brave by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde. If you liked her viral sermon you will not be surprised to learn that her thinking comes out of a career of thinking about these theological ideas.
Sundays 11:30 am 3/9, 3/30 & 4/6 in person
Mondays 8:30 pm 3/10, 3/31 & 4/7 on Zoom
